LOST & FOUND
Have you lost a pet or found a stray? The Jackson County Animal Shelter is dedicated to reuniting our beloved pets with their owners.
ARE YOU MISSING A PET?
Please call the Shelter first to make a report. It is possible that your pet may have already been turned in to the Shelter. You can also check out which pets are currently at our Shelter by visiting the Facebook page: Friends of Animal Rescue Center-Jackson County NC.
Posting a picture of your missing pet online is a great way to get the community on the lookout as well. Feel free to add a picture and your contact information on our Facebook page: Friends of Animal Rescue Center-Jackson County NC. Other helpful Facebook groups include:
Also, check in with the local veterinarian offices about their lost and found pet reports as not everyone has access to the Internet.
If your pet does end up in the Shelter, inform the Shelter immediately. You will be required to provide your ID, a current Rabies certificate, and proof of ownership (such as veterinary records, Rabies certificate, and/or photo). In order to reclaim your pet, all housing and stray fees must be paid in cash or check only. Know that your quick action is expected and appreciated as we strive to give all pets the loving home that they deserve.
Stray animals will be held for a minimum period of 72 hours; mandated by NCGS 19A-32.1. All animals reclaimed from the Shelter must be current on Rabies vaccinations according to State laws. There are fees associated with reclaiming your pet; however, the fees vary depending on how your animal was brought to the Shelter, length of stay, and procedures required by law prior to being released from custody.
DID YOU FIND A PET?
If you have found a stray animal, you have two options:
- Call the Shelter at 828-586-6138 to make a report and then house the animal until an owner is found.
- Turn the animal into the Shelter so efforts can be made to locate the owner.
Some pets have a Microchip implanted that gives the owner's information. This can be checked by taking the pet to any veterinary office, Shelter, or Humane Society. There is no cost for this service.
A good, clear picture of the found animal can often times help more than just a description. Feel free to make flyers or post on any of the above listed Facebook groups.
For an after-hours emergency situation, please call 828-586-1911. If a pet needs emergency medical care, the closest emergency veterinary hospitals are Haywood Animal Emergency (828-452-1478) or REACH Emergency Hospital (828-665-4399).
